Six people arrested over violent clashes at Akyem Segyimase in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region have been remanded into custody by the Kibi Circuit Court.
Prosecutors told the court that the suspects should remain in custody to enable further investigations into the unrest. They are scheduled to reappear in court in two weeks.
The clashes, which broke out last Thursday, reportedly began when a suspected drug addict from a local ghetto assaulted a resident, accusing him of flirting with his girlfriend.
The victim then mobilized some townsfolk to retaliate, sparking a violent confrontation between the “ghetto boys” and the town’s youth.
Eyewitnesses said some rioters wielded machetes and fired sporadic gunshots during the fight, leaving several people injured and forcing residents to flee.
The disturbances continued until Sunday, when a joint police and military team moved in to restore order. Three suspects were arrested during the operation, while security officials say they are still pursuing the alleged ringleader, identified as “Okyeman Rasta.”
The Assembly Member for Segyimase confirmed the incident, adding that the community has since returned to calm while the injured receive treatment at the Kibi Government Hospital.
Police say investigations are ongoing and more arrests are likely.
