The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a parliamentary by-election will be held in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement on Friday January 16, 2026, the Commission said the seat had become vacant after the MP’s passing, triggering the constitutional requirement for a by-election.
“Following the unfortunate death of the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency; Hon. Mahama Naser Toure, the seat of the Constituency in Parliament has become vacant,” the EC stated.
The Commission explained that the election is being conducted in line with Article 112(5) of the Constitution, adding that it will “hold a By-Election in the Constituency on Tuesday, 3rd March, 2026.”
Prospective candidates are expected to file their nominations from Monday, February 9 to Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office of the Commission at North Ridge. Nomination forms will be available for download from the EC’s website starting Friday, January 16, 2026.
According to the EC, nomination forms must be endorsed by a proposer and seconder who are registered voters in the constituency and supported by 18 other registered voters.
Candidates are also required to submit two recent bust-sized photographs with a red background at the time of filing.
The filing fee has been set at GH¢10,000, while female candidates and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of GH¢7,500.
“We urge the public to be guided accordingly,” the statement, signed by Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, added.
Mahama Naser Toure passed away at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a period of illness.
He was serving his fourth term in Parliament and held several leadership roles, including Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee, and membership on the Roads and Transport Committee, the House Committee, and the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee.
