The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has ruled out the return of “Dumsor” in 2017 contrary to earlier reports.
According to the power distributor, Ghana has enough generation capacity to serve consumers with power through 2017.
The Public Relations Officer of ECG, William Boateng in an interview with Starr News, said installed capacity for the country is currently around 3600mw more than the demand of 2000 mw.
“We have enough generation, if my memory serves me right, I know that our demand is in the range of 2000 and we have an installed capacity of 3600, so we have enough generation, so we should be optimistic going forward that the country has enough generation and I am sure we will be able to give you stable, reliable and safe power supply.
“We know that demand is going up but we know we have enough generation so what we have to do as distribution company is for us to work very hard, double our efforts and ensure that we strengthen our distribution network, make sure that lines are very robust and very strong so that we don’t have any distribution challenges,” Mr. Boateng said on the sidelines of a media interaction organized by the Eastern regional branch of ECG on Wednesday.
Mr. Boateng’s claims after the Volta River Authority (VRA) warned that there will be a return of the dreaded power crisis popularly called “dumsor”, which engulfed the country for three years, resulting in collapse of businesses.
According to the authority in a letter written by its Chief Executive Officer, Kirk Koffi, and addressed to the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), the situation is due to the fact that there will be a 15-day interruption in gas supply from the months of February and March.
