The Ministry of Education has rejected claims by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) that students were sidelined in the composition of the Governing Board of the Scholarship Authority, insisting that all relevant stakeholders were adequately consulted before the law was passed.
This comes after NUGS, in an earlier statement, expressed dissatisfaction with the Board’s composition, arguing that student interests were not directly and adequately represented.
The student body called for a review of the Board and raised concerns about the exclusion of student voices from decisions affecting scholarships and financial support for learners.
In response, the Ministry clarified that consultations held during the drafting of the Scholarship Authority law involved “all critical stakeholders within the education value chain,” including student bodies, civil society organisations, and other education sector partners.
The Ministry explained that the consultative process concluded that civil society organisations would serve as the umbrella body on the Governing Board, under which NUGS is represented.
“The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) is rightfully represented on the Board in accordance with the provisions of the law,” the Ministry stated.
It further urged the current leadership of NUGS to engage its immediate past executives to better understand the framework that led to the current representation.
“The Ministry of Education remains firmly committed to transparency, inclusiveness, and collaborative governance in the management and development of Ghana’s education sector,” the statement added.
