Deputy Defence Minister Brogya Genfi has announced that a member of each family that lost a relative in the El-Wak Sports Stadium recruitment stampede will be offered enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
Speaking after the tragic incident that claimed the lives of six young women during a recruitment exercise on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, Mr. Genfi said the gesture is meant to honour the memories of the victims and support grieving families.
He explained that the Ministry of Defence and GAF High Command are finalising modalities for the special enlistment, stressing that the move is not compensation but “a dignified recognition of the commitment these young women showed in wanting to serve Ghana.”
The tragic stampede occurred when a large crowd of applicants rushed the entry gates hours before the scheduled screening time, leading to a deadly crush.
The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that six applicants died and 28 others sustained injuries. Twelve of the injured remain in critical condition, with five currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the 37 Military Hospital.
President John Dramani Mahama earlier described the incident as “a heartbreaking loss” and directed a full investigation into the circumstances that led to the stampede. The government has also assured that safety protocols for all public recruitment exercises will be reviewed.
