President Akufo-Addo has criticized Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, over recent parliamentary issues, referring to him as a “troublemaker.”
His remarks followed Speaker Bagbin’s announcement that Parliament would reconvene on Monday, December 16, 2024, after the 2024 general elections.
However, Bagbin added that the venue for the 7th meeting of the 4th session of the 8th Parliament would be communicated to Members of Parliament in due course.
This decision means that Parliament will resume after the elections, with new MPs being elected for both the Majority and Minority sides.
The Speaker’s decision to reconvene Parliament came after he declined a request from Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to reconvene Parliament on November 28 and 29 to address urgent matters.
Speaker Bagbin insisted that parliamentary activities would remain suspended until after the elections, citing the absence of a prepared agenda from the Business Committee as the reason for the break.
During the NPP’s final rally in Legon, President Akufo-Addo called on Ghanaians to vote for NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and to vote for all NPP parliamentary candidates.
He also called on voters to elect NPP parliamentary candidates to prevent opposition speakers from causing trouble in Parliament.
He stated, “This coming Saturday, let’s all go out and vote for Dr. Bawumia. When you vote for Bawumia, make sure you vote for all the NPP parliamentary candidates. We’ve seen what’s happening in Parliament, where an opposition speaker is trying to cause trouble. I urge you all to vote for all NPP parliamentary candidates to prevent such a mistake again.”
