Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. (Med) Frank Amoakohene has called for a court ruling on election infractions in three constituencies, arguing that legal clarity is essential for future elections.
Speaking on Starr Chat with host Bola Ray, Dr. Amoakohene stressed the importance of setting the right precedent to ensure electoral integrity.
“These issues are fundamental to our elections. We need to set the right precedent, not just for this election, but for future elections as well,” he stated.
Dr. Amoakohene highlighted concerns regarding the Electoral Commission’s (EC) handling of results in Oboasi East. According to him, a declaration was initially made in favor of Samuel Oboaje, with video evidence supporting the announcement. However, he claimed that the EC, without consulting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or its candidates, conducted a recount and issued a new declaration.
He also pointed out that while a court ruling on a mandamus application covered six constituencies, Oboasi East was not included. Despite this, the EC allegedly incorporated Oboasi East in the re-declaration process without notifying the candidates.
“For the first declaration, the pink sheets were signed by our candidates and the MPP candidate. He signed under his own hands. Yet, the EC now claims that the process was conducted under duress,” Dr. Amoakohene stated.
Despite the ruling party’s overwhelming majority with 184 parliamentary seats, the Minister insisted that election infractions must be properly addressed through legal means. He argued that without a court ruling, similar disputes could arise in future elections.
“We want a court of competent jurisdiction to decide on the matter after assessing all the videos and evidence. Whatever the decision may be, whether in our favor or against us, we are ready to accept it,” he affirmed.
