The Ghana Police Service has arrested Michael Allotey, an alleged agent of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for possession of a weapon at the St. Theresa School polling station in the Okaikwei South Constituency. The arrest occurred following a heated altercation between Allotey and an Electoral Commission (EC) official during the ongoing general election.
The confrontation reportedly began when Allotey demanded that the pink sheets for sections A and B be completed before voting could commence. Eyewitnesses stated that the EC official objected, asserting that Allotey had no authority to dictate their duties. This led to a verbal exchange that briefly disrupted the proceedings.
Although the situation was eventually resolved, the Police, acting on a report of the disturbance, arrived at the scene. Upon searching, officers discovered that Allotey had a weapon. He was immediately taken into custody and is currently assisting with investigations.
In a statement, the Police reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring peace and security throughout the electoral process. They urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities or security concerns to the Election Emergency Command Centre through the toll-free line 0800311311.
The incident has drawn attention to the need for heightened security at polling stations as Ghanaians cast their votes. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to prevent further disruptions to the election process.
