The Network for Women’s Rights in Ghana (NETRIGHT) has congratulated Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana’s first-ever female vice president, following the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) victory in the 2024 elections.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang, a renowned academic and politician, made history as the NDC’s running mate alongside President-elect John Dramani Mahama. The NDC secured a decisive victory, with Mahama winning 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total vote.

NETRIGHT’s congratulatory message, signed by its convenor, Professor Akosua Darkwah, praised Professor Opoku-Agyemang for breaking the glass ceiling and becoming a role model for Ghanaian women.

The message also commended the NDC for leading the way in promoting gender balance and equality.

NETRIGHT also urged President-elect Mahama to provide the necessary support and resources for the Vice President’s office to ensure its effective operation.

The organisation called on the incoming NDC government to take steps to ensure the successful implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act 2024.

The statement concluded by reiterating the women’s movement in Ghana’s readiness to support Professor Opoku-Agyemang in advancing the rights of women and girls in the country.

As the first female vice president of Ghana, Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s achievement is a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards gender equality. Her leadership and commitment to women’s empowerment are expected to inspire a new generation of Ghanaian women to participate in politics and public service.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s impressive academic and professional background makes her well-suited for the role of vice president.

She has served as Minister for Education, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, and has received numerous awards for her contributions to education and women’s empowerment.

“Your boldness and determination are exceptional and a good example for emulation. Attaining the 2nd highest position in the country is a game changer for Ghanaian women.
We congratulate the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for leading the way for a woman to occupy the 2nd highest position in the country. We hope this will not be tokenistic but one
example of the ways in which the NDC will honour its promise to the women of Ghana including ensuring that women make up at least 30% of all its appointees.”

“We call on the President Elect, H.E. John Dramani Mahama to ensure that the Vice President’s office is provided with the necessary support and resources to facilitate its effective functioning. We also call on the incoming NDC government to put the necessary measures in place to facilitate the effective implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act 2024”.
