Energy Analyst Benjamin Nsiah has commended the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, for taking decisive steps to sanitize operations at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) by cancelling contracts that were breached.
Mr. Jinapor, speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 16, revealed that the ECG Board had terminated 202 contracts valued at $227 million, while an additional 147 contracts are currently under review and could be cancelled pending further investigations.
Reacting to the development in an interview on *Morning Starr* with Joshua Kodjo Mensah on Thursday, July 17, Mr. Nsiah praised the minister’s bold actions but cautioned that the process must be handled delicately to avoid perceptions of political bias.
“Yes, I think that we must commend the minister with respect to that. But that must also come in caution. And I think listening to the minister, he made mention of reasons why some of these contracts were terminated. I think the suppliers breach the contract in terms of the duration of which they are expected to supply this product to ECG. And if that is so, I think that we must commend the minister.”
He added that such perceptions, if not managed properly, could discourage potential investors and suppliers from engaging with ECG and the energy sector at large.
“But as I have always maintained that we should not also be communicating in such a way that it becomes like government in power witch-hunting government in opposition or opposition contract suppliers. We should be very careful in communicating because the moment we do see it is likely going to detest some investors who may want to supply products to ECG,” Mr. Nsiah said.
