The Energy Ministry has denied reports suggesting that fuel prices at the pumps have shot up by 4%.
According to the Ministry, the claim is palpably false.
The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) Ghana announced in a statement prices of fuel have been hiked by 4%.
“Fuel prices that used to trade at Ghc4.490/litre for both petrol and diesel have seen an increase to 4.670 a difference of about 18p or some 4.008% increases, price per gallon per the new increases is now Ghc21.015 from the previous Ghc20.20 for both products,” the Chamber’s statement read in parts.
The announcement by COPEC comes days after the NPA said prices of LPG and petrol will remain unchanged this month.
But commenting on the announcement by COPEC, the Communication Specialist at the Energy Ministry Nana Kofi Oppong-Damoah debunked the claim that prices of fuel have shot up.
Speaking Friday January 5, 2018, on Morning Starr he said “If we seek to engage the general public then let’s seek to be credible. Let’s be able to stand by our work that this work that I’ve done I’ve been very diligent in the work that I’ve done and I can categorically say these elements I’m putting out are indeed facts.”
According to him, he is “very disappointed” in the work of the Chamber describing its monitoring mechanism as “very deficient.”
“Indeed, there are 102 registered OMCs in this country. When you are asked to give the number that you’ve been able to monitor you mention one and then when you are pushed further for the number you say I’ve monitored a lot more but you are not able to say we monitored ten, fifteen or five. You do such a shoddy work and then you expect that we will all go with you,” he added.
