Legal tensions continue to mount as interested party Lawyer Bernard Bediako insists that Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, remains a convict despite ongoing proceedings at the Supreme Court.
Speaking in an interview with GHOne TV’s court correspondent, Murtala Inusah, after a court session, Lawyer Bediako explained the complexities surrounding Kumi’s legal status.
According to him, the Supreme Court raised concerns about whether Kumi, the applicant in the case, should even be granted a hearing at the apex court. This is due to his prior conviction for contempt of court following his failure to comply with court orders.
“The court was of the view that when such a situation arises, the sanctity of the court is at stake. You cannot run to the Supreme Court while an ongoing process has not been concluded and expect the court to cleanse you of your wrongdoing,” Bediako stated.
The Supreme Court, after deliberations, instructed the parties to submit legal arguments within seven days to clarify the legal position in such cases. A final ruling on whether Kumi is eligible to be heard in the Supreme Court will be made on March 12.

The controversy surrounding Ernest Yaw Kumi stems from a contempt of court ruling that resulted in his conviction. The matter is linked to a legal battle over his candidacy and actions before securing his parliamentary seat for Akwatia. Kumi was found guilty of disobeying a court order, leading to his conviction. Despite this, he contested and won the Akwatia parliamentary seat, a move that has been challenged in court.
His political journey has been fraught with legal hurdles, with opponents questioning his eligibility to hold office due to his conviction. The Supreme Court’s upcoming decision on March 12 will determine whether he can proceed with his appeal or if his legal troubles will further complicate his tenure as MP.
