A Security Analyst, Dr Adam Bonaa has called on the government to establish a fire station at Kantamanto Market to prevent a catastrophic recurrence of the recent devastating blaze.
In the early hours of Thursday, January 2, 2025, a raging fire swept through the market in Accra, destroying over 100 shops and leaving traders in despair. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse range of goods, the market was quickly consumed by flames.
The scene was one of heartbreak and chaos, as traders, many of whom had invested their life savings, sifted through the charred remains of their stalls in hopes of salvaging anything of value. The air was thick with smoke, and the sounds of sobs filled the atmosphere as the harsh reality of the disaster set in.
However, speaking with Starr News, Dr. Bonaa called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire.
“I believe a thorough investigation needs to be conducted. However, I also want to emphasize that other major markets, such as Kejetia, Makola, and various locations across the country, need to take preventive measures. The market queens or those in charge should ensure they educate their vendors and remain vigilant. The incoming government must focus on how they can support these markets and help rebuild them.
“It is crucial to establish a major fire station around Kantamanto, which would allow the fire service to deploy staff for regular surveillance of these markets and other high-risk areas. We could have prevented this devastating inferno, but unfortunately, it has already occurred.”
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Alex King Nartey, stressed the need for better logistical support and modern equipment to tackle such emergencies effectively.
