The European Union has stepped in to strengthen Ghana’s local poultry industry, providing 150,000-day-old chicks to support the Nkoko Nketenkete Poultry Programme
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, November 24, Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku has revealed that the initiative aims to revive domestic poultry production, cut the country’s reliance on imports, and enhance food security.
“The European Union has given us 150,000 day-old birds to support the Nkoko Nketenkete Program. This intervention will empower farmers, improve local supply, and contribute to Ghana’s goal of poultry self-sufficiency,” he said.
The Minister highlighted that the programme, managed by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, will benefit over 55,000 households across the country. Farmers will receive chicks, feed, veterinary support, and access to structured markets.
In addition to boosting food production, the programme is designed to create jobs, empower rural youth, and stimulate community development, while helping Ghana save an estimated $300 million annually on poultry imports.
Mr. Opoku underscored the government’s commitment to expanding agricultural support, strengthening extension services, and providing farmers with the tools and training necessary to thrive in modern farming.
