Government has ordered immediate evacuation of students from Bawku, Nalerigu, and surrounding areas, following renewed clashes and a tragic incident at Bawku Senior High School.
This comes alongside the imposition of a 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew, effective Sunday, July 27, 2025.
The move follows the fatal shooting of Mohammed Imoro Hakim Kundimah, a final-year Arts 7 student, who was gunned down on the school campus on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
His death came in the wake of reports that a young man, believed to be a Kusaasi, had also been killed, with his body allegedly dragged into the enclave of his perceived enemies under unclear circumstances.
In the aftermath of the school shooting, Bawku Municipal Director of Education, Isaac Agbeko Azasoo, addressed students and staff, announcing a temporary closure of the school.
He, however, indicated that final-year students will return on August 7, 2025—the scheduled date for their WAEC examination.
However, a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Sunday, July 27, confirmed the government’s decision to evacuate students from all affected areas until further notice.
“Further to the statement issued by The Ministry of the Interior announcing the imposition of a curfew in Bakwu, Nalerugu and its environs, from 2pm to 6am effective today, Sunday, 27th July, 2025, until further notice, government wants to stress that in addition to helping to enforce peace, the curfew is intended to create an environment conducive to the evacuation of all students in various educational institutions in affected areas, some of whom have been unfortunately targeted in the conflict,” the statement said.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting the lives of all residents, particularly students, and assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure their safety.
