The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced that all road projects that would be completed under the Mahama administration’s ‘Big Push’ agenda will be tolled.
The move is to create a dedicated revenue stream for the maintenance of newly constructed roads and ensure that they do not fall into disrepair. This policy shift will also end the era of ‘build and neglect’
“Every Big Push Road we are investing in, there will be a tolling policy because we need to raise money to start maintaining that road immediately it’s done,” he said on GhOne State of Affairs on Monday, 26th January, 2026.
The strategy, the Minister said further would also include a form of a rapid response framework for contractors as individuals or firms that would be awarded maintenance contracts will be held strictly accountable for the state of the roads.
“We are intending to have a maintenance contract on every road that is completed so that we don’t wait for after two years to say we are waiting for another money to reward a contract,” he noted.
He further highlighted on the importance of embarking on such a policy.
“It is somebody’s responsibility to say that when a pothole when a pothole begins to develop on some road, it’s your duty to fix it so that you will be paid some money for that so that we don’t wait for it to become a galley on the road,” he added.
