The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has declared strong support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate Ewurabena Aubynn, expressing confidence that she will win the rerun election in Ablekuma North and deliver development to the constituency.
Speaking to GHOne News during the rerun on Friday, July 11, Mr. Allotey criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for failing to bring progress to the area, despite holding the seat for years.
“They [NPP] tried to put intention on the election, but when God says something, nothing can change it. From day one, Ewurabena said she was the Member of Parliament. They said no and went to court. The court ruled that there should be a rerun — so they lost twice, and it means they will lose again,” he stated.
He continued, “They said this is their strong seat, but there’s no development here. This is no village far away, this is Accra. If they’ve voted for you all the time and they don’t see any development, they are going to change you. This time they’ll try Ewurabena and she’s going to bring development”
The Electoral Commission (EC) is conducting the rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency, following the December 2024 general elections in which results from those stations could not be properly verified.
While 18 of the 37 polling station results were certified, the EC said the remaining 19 required fresh voting to ensure electoral integrity.
The NPP has opposed the rerun, alleging bias in favour of the NDC, and announced a boycott.
Nonetheless, its parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, is participating in the election, following the dismissal of her injunction application by the Accra High Court.
The EC has assured the public of its independence and reiterated that the rerun is necessary to resolve the electoral dispute and restore parliamentary representation to Ablekuma North.
Security arrangements have been put in place by the Ghana Police Service in collaboration with the Electoral Commission to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and orderly process.
