The Fanteakwa South District Chief Executive Mercy Korang has indicated that the Assembly has decided to relocate waste collection center located near Ghana Red Cross Society’s accident and emergency response office in Bunso and Nsutem Roundabout in Eastern region.
The decision by the Assmbly follows agitation by residents and businesses over environmental pollution being caused by the waste collection center due to poor management of the waste.
According to residents, the waste container often overflows, spreading refuse into its surroundings and emitting a strong stench that affects daily activities and nearby businesses.
The situation has reportedly forced a Red Cross office in the area to shut down due to the unbearable smell and unhygienic conditions. A nearby herbal clinic is also said to be adversely affected, raising concerns about public health and safety.

Food vendors and taxi drivers operating around the roundabout say the stench is driving customers away and negatively impacting their livelihoods.
Management of Linda Dor Restaurant, a leading restaurant in Ghana with a branch in the area, has also expressed concern over the location of the waste container.
“You can see every business, you know, is comcerned about the health issues and the risk of the people around. It’s something that is a worry to us. The situation needs to be tackled very, very seriously. It is something that if we don’t work on it very well, health issues can crop up here”. Simon Tetteh, Manager, Linda Dor Highway Rest Stop.

He added that management of Linda Dor is also concerned about the encouragment at high risk LPG gas dispensing environment by food vendors exposing the entire area not only to sanitation challenges but also fire outbreak.
“We have taken a lot of decisions, a lot of petitions to the authorities to work on those issues that we should get that place clean, we should get the people at the roadside, almost coming closer to us, so they should find a new place for them so that in the long run we don’t have any disaster here. But it keeps on coming up every day, now. It’s a worry to us, that’s why we have taken the opportunity. We’ve come to the assembly, we talked to them about the issues there” Simon Tetteh added.
