Ghanaians unlikely to elect another Northern President in 2028 – Pro-NPP Group

A pro-NPP group, OAK for President, says voter sentiment suggests Ghanaians may not elect another northern presidential candidate in 2028.

A Pro-New Patriotic Party group, OAK For President says Ghanaians will not immediately elect another president from the Northern part of Ghana after the end of John Dramani Mahama’s tenure in 2028, therefore urging delegates of the party to vote for Ohene Agyapong Kennedy as flagbearer of NPP.

According to the group, the current voter sentiment suggests limited enthusiasm among Ghanaians for another presidential candidate from Northern Ghana.

The group referenced earlier remarks by Dr. Bawumia himself during 2028 election campaign, questioning whether Ghanaians would be willing to vote for another northern candidate after President John Dramani Mahama.

“If Dr Bawumia genuinely believed when he asked in the run up to the 2023 primaries; if Ghanaians would vote for another northern candidate after HE John Mahama? What has changed? Has the voter behavior shifted?” the group asked.

OAK for President recalled pre-2024 projections that Dr. Bawumia’s northern and Muslim background would significantly boost support in the Zongo communities and the northern regions; expectations they said were not reflected in the election results.

“This is not about ethnicity or prejudice,” the group emphasized. “It is about electoral mathematics, voter psychology, and the national mood.”

The group said party must confront the realities of its 2024 electoral defeat instead of avoiding difficult internal discussions as it prepares for its January 31, 2026, flagbearer election.

They expressed concern that the findings of the party’s post-election report remain largely unexplained and treated as a taboo subject.

“The same electorate that rejected the NPP in 2024 will return to the polls unchanged in 2028,” the group warned, stressing that ignoring the causes of the defeat could further weaken the party’s electoral prospects.

The January 31st primaries is being contested by Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, a Businessman and former Legislator, Dr.Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President, Dr.Bryan Acheampong, a businessman and Lawmaker, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Education Minister, and Kwabena Agyepong.

Addressing the media in Koforidua, the group, OAK for President, explained that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong stands tall among all the Candidates as capable to win power in 2028.

“It is for this important reason that OAK for president, a political action group upon a careful, objective and selfless study and analysis of the fortunes of Npp in 2028, humbly appeal to all delegates to assist the NPP elect not just a flagbearer per se, but a flagbearer who is capable of delivering power with the slightest effort”.

The group added “Ohene Agyapong Kennedy per all objective parameters is our best bet for 2028 without stress. He is a grassroot man whose popularity and impact are so infectious and transcends even beyond party, ethnic and religious lines. He is a walking manifestation of what he promises to do and deliver. He is the most potent antidote to the NPP’s nemesis in these times. He is a leader that destiny has carefully prepared and forged in the torrid fires of the times we are in. He is the only one who best understands the cry of the poor, the incredulity of the rich, the despair of the homeless, the fortitude of the middle class and most importantly the neglect of the delegates and the grassroots”.
