The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 54-year-old mason, Isaac Adonteng, for allegedly killing his 13-year-old daughter, Celestine Adonteng, in Kokrobite.
According to a statement from the Accra Regional Police Command on Thursday, November 20, preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was physically assaulted with a cane, a metal pipe, and other objects after being accused of taking food belonging to her younger sibling.
Despite sustaining multiple injuries, the suspect allegedly failed to seek medical attention for her.
Police acting on a complaint visited the residence and found Celestine unconscious. She was rushed to the Police Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Her body has since been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The police added that exhibits retrieved from the scene include a cutlass and a metal pipe allegedly used in the assault.
The police have cautioned parents and guardians against using excessive force in correcting children, noting the dangers of such actions.
“The Accra Regional Police Command strongly cautions parents and guardians against the use of excessive force in correcting children, as such actions are unlawful and can lead to tragic outcomes,” the statement said.
The public has also been urged to report all forms of child abuse and domestic violence promptly.
“The Command urges the public to report all forms of child abuse and domestic violence promptly for swift intervention and protection of victims,” the statement concluded.
