Fear has gripped the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Senior High School after a candidate sitting for the 2026 West African Senior High School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) died following a brief illness during the ongoing examinations.
Authorities at KNUST Senior High School say the school is grieving with the family of the deceased WASSCE candidates while also providing emotional support for students writing the ongoing examination.
The school further revealed that one registered candidate has dropped out and is currently absent from exams.
Despite these challenges, however, a pregnant candidate successfully sat for the ongoing oral—the oral English oral paper alongside other students.
In all, 1,022 candidates from the school are participating in this year’s WASSCE as the nationwide examination enters the core subject stage.
Assistant Headmaster in charge of academics and Assistant Examination Supervisor, Agyekum Kweku, said the examination process has so far been smooth, adding that the school remains firm on its zero tolerance against examination malpractice.
“Oh, we have about 1,122 students. And we have about 495 girls, and the remaining happen to be boys. The only unfortunate thing that we’ve experienced is that one of the students is dead…unfortunately, about day two—the day to write that paper, we had information from the parents that he is dead. He was sick anyway and was admitted, and he went through a series of tests at the hospital. So apart from him, we don’t have any challenge.
“And Bramley, too, even though she registered, but yesterday she was supposed to come and write the paper, she couldn’t come. And today, too, she couldn’t come. We asked of the reason, and we were told that she had stopped the school long ago. After registering, she didn’t come back again,” he said.
