The Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) unconditionally condemns the violent disagreement that ensued at the Parliament Appointment Committee on Thursday Night.
The violent altercation, which saw lawmakers engage in heated confrontations, has led to growing concerns about the ability of the Appointments Committee to effectively fulfill its constitutional mandate.
The unrest began when the Minority in Parliament proposed rescheduling the vetting process to Friday, January 31.
In a statement issued by the Executive Director of FOSDA, Theodora Anti indicated that it is unfortunate that the leaders resort to such Chaos and violence to address conflicting issues.
She added that the conduct of the Parliamentarians is unacceptable and detrimental to the country’s peace and security.
“We are particularly alarmed by the unacceptable violent destruction of public property by the leaders.
“Such actions not only undermine the integrity of the parliamentary process and democracy, but inadvertently misguides constituents and followers to resort to violence. It sets a poor precedent and erodes public trust in elected officials to carry out their duties responsibly”, madam Theodora added.
She continued: “We urge all members leaders to uphold the standards of decorum and civility expected of their office even in the face of conflict.
“We call on the Speaker of Parliament to immediately conduct an investigation into the incident and those responsible held accountable.”
