The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has issued a stern 14-day ultimatum to illegal miners operating in forest reserves and waterways, warning them to vacate these areas or face the full force of the law.
Dr. Amoakohene, reaffirming his commitment to safeguarding the region’s natural resources, emphasized his support for President John Mahama’s vision of promoting responsible mining.
“Anyone engaged in mining within forest reserves must leave immediately. We are giving them up to two weeks. If you refuse to comply, you will be on the wrong side of the law,” he cautioned.
He further stressed his administration’s determination to rid the region’s water bodies of illegal mining activities.
“If you have any investment in water bodies and are polluting them, you have two weeks to stop. A task force will be deployed to ensure compliance and restore normalcy within the mining sector,” he warned.
Government Steps Up Fight Against Illegal Mining
The Ashanti Region has been severely affected by illegal mining, with forests and rivers continually under threat despite previous government interventions. The Minister assured that his administration is implementing a robust and collaborative strategy to combat the menace.
“I am working closely with other Regional Ministers whose jurisdictions also share tributaries of key river bodies with Ashanti. This will allow us to take a holistic approach in addressing the issue,” he stated.
Illegal mining has left several abandoned pits in mining communities, posing significant environmental and safety hazards. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has already commenced enforcement operations, seizing equipment used in illegal mining activities.
Minister Addresses Obuasi Military-Miner Clash
Dr. Amoakohene also addressed the recent violent clash between the military and illegal miners in Obuasi, which resulted in nine deaths. He assured that thorough investigations are ongoing to ensure accountability and justice.
“Not long ago, nine lives were lost due to a confrontation between the military and illegal miners. The President has issued a white paper, directing that investigations be conducted into the matter to ensure the protection of our people,” he stated.
The Minister’s firm stance signals a renewed effort by the government to tackle illegal mining, which continues to devastate the environment and threaten water sources across the region.
