The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has announced a halt to its recent strike against illegal mining, or galamsey, a practice that continues to devastate Ghana’s environment and natural resources. This suspension, effective immediately, follows a democratic vote by UTAG members nationwide.
Illegal mining has long plagued Ghana, causing widespread environmental destruction to forests, water bodies, and farmlands. Public opposition to galamsey has surged in recent years, with calls from environmental groups, civil society, and government bodies for stricter measures. UTAG joined this cause to advocate for sustainable resource management, though the strike’s suspension reflects a shift in their strategy to seek alternative methods in their anti-galamsey campaign.
In a statement released on October 29, 2024, and signed by the UTAG National President, Prof. Mamudu A. Akudugu, he voiced that, “This decision, while difficult, comes in response to the widespread and democratic vote by UTAG members nationwide.”
The association emphasized the importance of their advocacy, pointing to increasing public concerns over galamsey’s impact on land, water, and livelihoods. However, given current national circumstances, UTAG believes pausing the strike best serves students, parents, and the wider public. “We understand that this may disappoint some members of the public, and we do not take their confidence in us lightly,” the statement added, underscoring UTAG’s commitment to pursuing alternative legal approaches.
UTAG reassured the public that its anti-galamsey campaign remains a priority. “Our efforts will continue, resolute and focused, on opposing those who exploit our natural resources with disregard for the law or the well-being of our communities,” Prof. Akudugu affirmed. UTAG aims to keep advocating for environmental responsibility and justice, with a long-term vision to safeguard Ghana’s land and water resources for future generations.
In addition to pausing the strike, UTAG expressed deep gratitude to its members for their involvement and urged all stakeholders to support the fight against galamsey. “We will not relent in our efforts to bring about meaningful change,” the statement concluded, emphasizing UTAG’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
