The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has amended its statutes to allow presidents to serve up to three four-year terms, extending the previous limit of two terms.
The decision was ratified on Tuesday, August 12, during the 31st Ordinary Congress in Pampram, where 114 of 123 delegates voted in favour of the change. Six voted against, while three abstained.
This amendment means current GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, who assumed office in 2019, could seek a third term when his current mandate ends in 2027.
Proponents say the move will ensure continuity in leadership and allow ongoing reforms to be completed without interruption. Critics, however, warn it could lead to excessive concentration of power and limit opportunities for new leadership.
With this change, the GFA joins several other football governing bodies that permit presidents to serve three terms, a move supporters believe strikes a balance between stability and democratic governance.
