President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, December 3, met with João Cravinho, the European Union Special Representative for the Sahel, at the Presidency in Accra to discuss deepening cooperation on regional security and development.
The meeting focused on reinforcing the strategic partnership between Ghana and the EU, particularly in tackling shared challenges related to security, governance, and development in the volatile Sahel region.

President Mahama highlighted Ghana’s proactive diplomatic efforts to mediate relations with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
He stressed the urgent need for a unified regional platform and proposed a revitalised Accra Initiative to effectively counter the growing threat of terrorism in West Africa.

The President confirmed Ghana’s commitment to maintaining diplomatic outreach to the Sahel states, noting that Mr. Cravinho would follow up with a visit in early 2026 to translate discussions into concrete projects.
Both parties agreed to expedite the finalisation and implementation of the EU-Ghana Security and Defence Partnership to foster closer collaboration.

Mr. Cravinho reaffirmed the EU’s support for Ghana in strengthening maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, underlining its critical role in promoting stability across the Sahel.
