The Government of Ghana has announced the establishment of a GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund as part of measures to support peace-building and accelerate socio-economic recovery in the conflict-affected area.

The fund, which will be disbursed over a three-year period between 2026 and 2028, follows government’s endorsement of the Bawku Conflict Mediation Report presented by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, the initiative is aimed at addressing the severe human, social and economic losses caused by years of insecurity, which have undermined livelihoods, investment and development in Bawku and its environs.

Government said the revitalisation fund will be used to reconstruct and develop priority infrastructure, including roads, healthcare facilities, schools, markets, irrigation systems and security installations, to restore Bawku’s status as a major economic and trading hub in northern Ghana.

The fund will be managed by a high-level committee chaired by the Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, who also serves as Acting Minister for Defence. Other members include the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri, and the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, who will represent Members of Parliament from the area.

Beyond the economic intervention, government reaffirmed its commitment to lasting peace by fully accepting the findings and recommendations of the mediation process. It reiterated the legal recognition of Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the lawful Bawku Naba and pledged to facilitate reconciliation efforts among all stakeholders.

Government further appealed to traditional authorities, political leaders, civil society organisations and residents to support the peace process in the interest of national unity and stability.
