Ghana has strongly condemned the recent military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an “unconstitutional usurpation of authority” and a direct attack on democratic governance.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana expressed concern over the disruption of the electoral process, which followed the peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on 23 November 2025.
The announcement of the results, scheduled for 27 November, has been obstructed by the coup.
Ghana is urging for a return to constitutional order, emphasizing that “any grievances arising from the elections must be addressed solely through peaceful, transparent, and legally recognised mechanisms.”
The government also called for the safety of all citizens and foreign nationals, particularly officials of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission, whose “safety and secure passage must be guaranteed without delay.”
The Ghanaian government has appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to exercise calm and restraint to avoid escalating tensions.
Ghana reaffirmed its full support for ECOWAS and the African Union in their coordinated response, underlining the importance of “regional and continental protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.”
