The Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President (DAOOP), has temporarily suspended the Ghanaian citizenship application process for historical diasporans as part of efforts to improve the system.
In a statement dated Sunday, February 1, 2026, the two institutions said the decision was taken to allow for a review and enhancement of the application framework to make it more accessible and efficient for applicants across the diaspora.
“The current application process for Ghanaian Citizenship by Historical Diasporans has been temporarily suspended,” the statement announced, describing the move as “a joint institutional effort to further streamline and enhance the overall experience.”
The Ministry and DAOOP reaffirmed their commitment to the Pan-African vision of reconnecting with people of African descent, stressing that Ghana remains open and welcoming to members of the global African family.
According to the statement, the review is aimed at ensuring that future applications are “more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly for our brothers and sisters across the diaspora.”
Applicants have been advised not to submit applications or make any payments during the suspension period.
Authorities said revised timelines and updated guidelines will be communicated through official channels once the review process is completed.
