Ghana has become ‘Cocaine Coast’ under Mahama – Nana B

The NPP has accused the Mahama government of allowing Ghana to become a major transit hub for international narcotics trafficking.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has alleged that Ghana has become a major transit point for international narcotics trafficking under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

Addressing the media in Accra, the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, said the party’s concerns go beyond individual drug seizures, alleging that the frequency and scale of recent interceptions point to deeper weaknesses in Ghana’s ports, airports and cargo security systems.

“Under the watch of President John Dramani Mahama and his NDC government, Ghana is no longer merely at risk of becoming a hub for international drug trafficking, the evidence before us shows we have arrived. Ghana has become a Cocaine Coast, and this Government must own that shame and quickly find a solution to this mess.”

He further alleged that the party had received intelligence suggesting that Ghana had become a major transit point because of compromised security checkpoints and alleged official involvement.

“Our information is that our country has become a major transit point for narcotics not by accident, but because of the complicity of officials at our ports and our airports who have compromised the very checkpoints meant to protect this nation.”

The NPP’s comments follow a series of major narcotics seizures in Ghana and abroad involving consignments the party says are linked to the country.

The party cited the March 2025 seizure of 3,319.66 kilogrammes of cocaine at Pedu Junction, valued at an estimated US$350 million, as well as another seizure of approximately 120 slabs of cocaine on the Takoradi-Cape Coast Highway valued at about US$150 million.

Other cases cited include 89.74 kilogrammes of cocaine intercepted at the Swissport Cargo Terminal at Kotoka International Airport in April 2025, 866 parcels of suspected cocaine seized at Tema Harbour in August 2026, and nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine intercepted at France’s Port of Dunkirk in September 2026 from a container originating from Ghana.

The NPP said the cases it has identified, including seizures in the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, France and South Africa, have a combined estimated street value exceeding US$1 billion between 2025 and September 2026.

Nana Boakye said the party believes the pattern requires accountability and a review of the systems being used to prevent narcotics trafficking through Ghana.

“The pattern is unmistakable, Ghana is being used as a transit hub.”

The NPP is consequently demanding the immediate recall of Parliament and the establishment of a special bipartisan committee to conduct a public inquiry into the seizures, with powers to summon witnesses and compel the production of relevant documents.
