The Ghana Hockey Association held the 13th Annual Commemorative Hockey Tournament in honour of the late President, Professor John Evans Atta-Mills, at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch in Accra.
The event which was held on Saturday, July 26, drew a wide cross-section of participants, including former ministers, hockey veterans, active players, and sports enthusiasts, all gathered to celebrate the former leader’s lifelong commitment to sports and his role in promoting hockey in Ghana.
The day featured a series of friendly matches between local teams, with each participating side receiving a commemorative plaque in memory of Professor Mills. Organizers emphasized the tournament’s role in preserving his legacy and encouraging youth participation in sports.

Speaking at the event, dignitaries praised Professor Mills not only for his achievements in office but also for his deep love for hockey. Several speakers urged the government and private sector to support the renovation of the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch to meet international standards, allowing Ghana to host future global hockey competitions.

The tournament has become an annual fixture on the national sports calendar, serving as both a tribute and a call to action for the continued development of hockey in the country.
