Ghana and Nigeria shared the spoils in a thrilling 1-1 stalemate to open their Group A campaign in the 2025 WAFU Zone B U20 Boys Cup, which kicked off on Thursday at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
The Black Satellites made a strong start and took a deserved first-half lead when captain Aziz Misbau fired a powerful strike into the top corner, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.
Ghana’s aggressive pressing and relentless tempo kept Nigeria on the back foot for most of the first half, as the Black Satellites created a flurry of chances that narrowly missed the target.
But the Flying Eagles came out revitalized after the break, gradually gaining control and applying sustained pressure. Their efforts were rewarded when Abdullahi Muhammed rose above the defense to head in a perfectly delivered corner, drawing the sides level and quieting the home crowd.
The encounter proved to be a hard-fought battle, as both teams displayed impressive physicality and technical skill. Fierce midfield tussles and moments of individual brilliance added to the spectacle, but despite a flurry of late opportunities on both sides, the deadlock remained unbroken.
The stalemate sees both Ghana and Nigeria earn a point each in the three-team Group A, which also includes Benin.
Nigeria will take on Benin on Sunday, while Ghana will be on the sidelines, closely watching the result to determine their path to the semi-finals.
The thrilling opener showcased the depth of talent in West African youth football and reignited the storied rivalry between the two regional powerhouses.
Action resumes on Friday with Group B fixtures as the tournament rolls on in Prampram.
