The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) is set to launch a series of protests demanding a revision of the escalated charges on license verification from Ghc550 to Ghc3,000.
Led by Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, President of GRNMA, the association asserts that the fee increase, amounting to a staggering 445.5%, is unjustifiable and burdensome for its members.
The planned demonstrations, scheduled from March 22nd to April 3rd, 2024, will commence with the symbolic act of wearing red bands across all healthcare facilities and workspaces where nurses and midwives operate.
This will be followed by a major press conference on March 27th to amplify their grievances.
Subsequently, GRNMA plans to escalate their protest by withdrawing outpatient department services from March 28th to April 2nd, culminating in a complete withdrawal of inpatient and other essential services on April 3rd.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of response from relevant institutions such as the Parliament of Ghana, the Ministry of Health, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council, GRNMA emphasizes the urgent need for acknowledgment and action on their demand for a review of the GH¢3,000.00 fee.
In a statement, Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo stressed that these actions are imperative, given the economic challenges faced by nurses and midwives in Ghana, coupled with the inadequate salary structures.
The association proposes a maximum 25% increment, deemed manageable by all grades of nurses and midwives.
All nurses and midwives are urged to participate fully in the planned protests, with GRNMA affirming their right to engage in these activities without fear of reprisal or coercion.
“All nurses and midwives are expected to fully participate in the above-stated actions because it is their right to do so and therefore under no circumstance should they be threatened or coerced”.
The GRNMA leadership, including President Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, 1st Vice President Mr. Samuel Alagkora Akolgo, General Secretary Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, and National Treasurer Mr. Moses Robertson Anyigba, stands united in their pursuit of fair and equitable treatment for their members.
