Ghana is set to host a high-level side event on reparatory justice during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in September 2026, as part of efforts to advance the global campaign for reparations for Africa and people of African descent.
This was disclosed by President John Dramani Mahama while speaking at the 21st Extraordinary Summit of the African Union in Luanda, Angola.
President Mahama said the September event would bring together key stakeholders to assess progress and determine the next steps in advancing the reparations agenda.
“As a follow-up, Ghana will host a high-level side event during the 81st UN General Assembly Session this September to receive progress reports from our established panels.”
He said particular attention would be given to reports from panels established to support the implementation of the United Nations General Assembly’s 2025 reparations resolution.
The panels are expected to provide expertise and recommendations on the political, legal, historical and cultural aspects of reparatory justice.
The President also cited the outcomes of the Next Steps Conference held in Accra in June 2026, which broadened the reparations discourse to include indentured labour as a historical injustice.
“I have invited all Heads of State to join us as we continue to lead the charge for justice, restitution, and dignity for Africa and people of African descent worldwide” he added.
The conference also resulted in the creation of three specialised bodies: the High-Level Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice, the Global Experts Panel on the Restitution of Cultural Heritage, and the Global Legal Panel on Reparatory Justice.
President Mahama, who was named African Union Champion for Reparations at the June conference, reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to leading efforts for justice and restitution.
