The Management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the temporary shutdown of the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant, citing unresolved contractual issues and the prolonged lack of critical maintenance as the main reasons behind the decision.
According to the company, the move has become necessary to safeguard the integrity of its operations and ensure the long-term delivery of safe and quality water to consumers. “This decision was not taken lightly. It follows extensive reviews and stakeholder consultations aimed at finding a sustainable path forward,” GWL explained in a statement.
The desalination plant has, over the years, been a vital source of potable water to several communities including Teshie, Nungua, Spintex, parts of Sakumono, La, and surrounding areas along the eastern coastal corridor of Accra. Its shutdown is therefore expected to temporarily affect water supply to these areas.
In the interim, GWL says it has put in place alternative measures to reduce the impact on customers. “We have begun rerouting water from other treatment plants and prioritizing essential facilities such as hospitals, schools, and health centres,” the statement added.
Mr. Stanley Martey, Chief Manager for Public Relations and Communications at GWL, expressed the company’s regret over the inconvenience caused. “We sincerely apologise to our cherished customers for any disruption this may cause. We are working around the clock to resolve the issues and restore full operations as soon as possible,” he assured.

Mr. Martey further emphasized that management is committed to transparency and will keep the public informed at every stage of the process. “Regular updates will be shared through our official website, social media platforms, the media, and community engagement representatives,” he noted.
GWL reaffirmed its dedication to delivering safe, reliable, and continuous water supply services nationwide, adding that management remains hopeful that the ongoing engagements will lead to a swift resolution and full restoration of operations at the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant.
