The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a three-day interruption in water supply to parts of the Greater Accra Region and the Tema Metropolis following emergency repair works at the Kpong Treatment Plant.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, 28 August 2025, management of GWL explained that the shutdown became necessary after damage occurred to the raw water transmission pipeline that feeds the plant. The company confirmed that repair works have already commenced and are expected to last at least three days.
The development means households and businesses across the entire Tema Metropolis and several parts of Accra will face water supply challenges during the repair period. Some of the affected communities include Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, parts of East Legon, and surrounding areas.
Residents in these areas have been advised to store adequate quantities of water while supply is still flowing intermittently. GWL further noted that measures are in place to provide support for critical service providers, particularly hospitals and schools, who may face difficulties during the shutdown. Such institutions have been directed to reach out to GWL via its toll-free line, dedicated phone numbers, WhatsApp channels, and social media handles for urgent assistance.

The Kpong Treatment Plant, located in the Eastern Region, is one of the largest and most critical facilities that supply water to Accra and Tema. Over the years, the plant has undergone several upgrade and expansion works to meet growing demand. However, the pipelines that feed the facility have experienced recurring challenges.
• In December 2024, a burst in the 42-inch transmission pipeline from Kpong disrupted water supply to Tema and nearby communities, including Afienya, Sakumono, Dawhenya, Kpone, and Prampram.
• Earlier in September 2020, GWL carried out major repairs on the same transmission line, replacing sections of the ageing 50-year-old pipe that had been leaking and contributing to frequent supply interruptions. (GBC Ghana Online)
These recurring issues underscore the vulnerability of the Kpong system, despite its role as a backbone of water supply for the capital and its environs.
While apologising for the inconvenience, GWL reaffirmed its commitment to restore full water supply immediately after completion of the repair works. The utility appealed for patience and cooperation from customers, stressing that it remains committed to delivering reliable water supply despite the current setback.
