Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has urged the Ghana Navy to remain steadfast in protecting the nation’s maritime borders, stressing that Ghana’s sovereignty cannot be secured without strong maritime security.
Delivering her address at the 2025 Ghana Navy Memorial Day, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang commended the sacrifices of naval personnel and reaffirmed government’s commitment to equipping the Navy to effectively confront emerging threats, including terrorism.
The Ghana Navy Memorial Day, observed annually on September 14, honours gallant personnel who laid down their lives in service to the nation.

It also serves as a solemn occasion to reflect on the Navy’s role in safeguarding Ghana’s maritime sovereignty and its contributions to regional and international peace.
This year’s commemoration is particularly significant, marking 35 years since the bombing of GNS Yogaga during ECOMOG operations in Liberia, and 11 years since the institution of the Memorial Day.
The 2025 edition spans four days of activities designed to preserve the Navy’s history, inspire patriotism, and pay tribute to fallen heroes whose sacrifices continue to shape Ghana’s maritime legacy.
