The Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned an alleged brutal attack on Peace FM’s Eastern Regional Correspondent, Michael Akrofi, by a police officer during a farmers’ protest in Kukurantumi.
The protest, held in Kukurantumi in the Eastern Region, was organized by farmers opposing the destruction of their crops by Fulani herdsmen and their cattle.
Akrofi was reportedly covering the demonstration when the officer allegedly strangled him three times and issued threats. The journalist sustained injuries to his neck, back, and waist and sought medical attention.
The GJA has called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Eastern Regional Police Command to investigate the incident immediately and hold the officer accountable. 4
The association emphasized that attacks on journalists undermine press freedom and that media practitioners must be allowed to work without fear of intimidation or violence.
The GJA also stressed the importance of collaboration between journalists and security agencies to ensure public safety while safeguarding democratic freedoms. It affirmed its commitment to protecting journalists’ rights and monitoring the case closely.
