The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has clarified that any party member seeking to contest for a party position who currently holds an office appointed by the President or government must resign from that office at least six clear months before filing nomination forms.
The directive was outlined by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, during a media briefing on Thursday, January 29, 2026, as part of efforts to ensure dedicated leadership and reduce conflicts of interest within the party.
Mr. Kwetey explained that the party is “rich with so many people… millions of supporters” capable of holding party positions, and it is unnecessary for members to hold dual roles in government and the party.
“If you want to work for the party, resign from whatever position you are, suspend to time, and come and dedicate yourself and work for the party,” he said.
He emphasized that the principle aligns with broader reforms, including proposed constitutional provisions preventing members of parliament from simultaneously holding government positions.
“Work for the party is a great word,” Mr. Kwetey added, noting that some members are fully dedicated to party work without holding any government office.
According to him, the rule is intended to strengthen party governance, encourage focused leadership, and ensure that those vying for party offices are fully committed to the NDC’s organizational and strategic objectives.
