Gov’t commited to retooling TVET institutions as first-choice career pathway – Opare Addo

Government pushes to make TVET Ghana’s first-choice education path

The government has reaffirmed its xxcommitment to retooling Technical, Vocational, Entrepreneurship and Training (TVET) institutions across Ghana to make them the preferred first choice for parents and students seeking quality skills education.

Speaking at the National TVET Week Policy Dialogue 2026 under the theme “Resetting TVET: Powering Ghana’s Industrial and Economic Transformation,” Minister for Youth Development and Employment, George Opare Addo, described TVET as the fulcrum for building great nations. He stressed that skilled labour remains essential for solving economic challenges and driving industrial growth.

“Our goal is to encourage parents to consider Technical and Vocational education as a first choice rather than treating it as the last resort,” the Minister said.

He noted that the government’s focus on rebranding and prioritising TVET seeks to position it as a pathway to decent work, entrepreneurship, innovation and rewarding careers for the youth.

Opare Addo explained that ongoing retooling efforts, including the provision of modern equipment and tools, will equip trainees with cutting-edge competencies demanded by the job market. He emphasised closer collaboration with industry to ensure training aligns with professional job placement needs and supplies skilled labour to feed Ghana’s industries.

He called for a decisive change in public mindset, urging Ghanaians to recognise TVET as the pivot on which industries thrive.

The week-long celebration coincided with an exhibition featuring innovations and inventions from nearly all of Ghana’s 16 TVET institutions. Displays covered automobiles, clothing and textiles, solar lighting, electrical and electronic panel circuits, and more.

Tema Technical Institute showcased its fufu-pounding machines among other creations.

Grace Kaiser, Head of Department at the institute, told Starr FM that the inventions are built with quality materials to support the growth of local industries and urged greater patronage of locally made products.

Eric Saforo, Team Lead for Skills and Innovations at Youth Opportunity and Transformation Africa (YOTA), challenged parents to take advantage of the improved TVET opportunities.

He noted that sustained government investment is steadily eroding the old negative perceptions surrounding technical and vocational training. Saforo also welcomed the proposed establishment of a TVET Fund, saying it would further strengthen the Ghana TVET Service to deliver reliable, cutting-edge solutions and human resources for industry.

The dialogue and exhibition underscored the government’s determination to position TVET at the centre of Ghana’s industrial and economic transformation.
