The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has announced the full restoration of power supply following a system disturbance that led to widespread outages across parts of southern and northern Ghana on the night of Thursday, April 3.
According to a press release issued by GRIDCo, the power disruption began at 8:09 p.m. when the Tafo-Nkawkaw transmission line tripped due to a fault. Efforts to restore the line triggered a series of adjacent line trips, ultimately causing the loss of some power generation plants.
This cascading effect led to power cuts in several areas including parts of Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, Techiman, Bui, Tumu, Sawla, and other parts of northern Ghana beyond Kumasi.
GRIDCo’s System Control Centre acted swiftly to stabilize the grid and began restoration efforts immediately. By 10:57 p.m., power supply had been fully restored to all affected areas.
The company has apologized to the public for the inconvenience caused and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a stable national transmission network.
GRIDCo operates the National Interconnected Transmission System and is responsible for the economic dispatch and transmission of electricity from wholesale suppliers to distribution utilities across Ghana and parts of West Africa.
