After a three-day shutdown that left thousands scrambling for alternative water sources, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) announced on Wednesday 19th March 2025 that its Barekese Water Treatment Plant has resumed full operations, restoring supply to the Greater Kumasi area.
This follows urgent repairs at the Suame Roundabout, a critical juncture where construction projects had threatened the stability of the water network.
The shutdown, which began on March 17, allowed engineers to reinforce interconnection pipelines and replace faulty foot valves—a move GWL described as “essential to prevent long-term disruptions” amid Kumasi’s rapid urban expansion.
The statement also noted that the Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, personally oversaw coordination efforts, praised the GWL team for their “proactive approach to safeguarding public infrastructure.”
Pressure Builds, Patience Requested
While taps are running again, residents may notice fluctuating water pressure as the system stabilizes.
“It’s like restarting a giant engine,” explained a GWL spokesperson. “Some neighborhoods will see immediate service, while others might wait a few hours as pressure equalizes across the network.”
The company urged customers to report leaks or irregularities promptly.
GWL’s statement emphasized gratitude to residents for their resilience during the outage. “We understand the inconvenience this caused, especially for households and businesses,” it read. “Your patience fuels our commitment to building a more resilient water system.”
