Parliament has been compelled to suspend sittings over disagreements on the proportional allocation of slots for debate on President Mahama’s State of the Nation Address.
The sharp disagreements that started last week during the presentation of the business statement reached a crescendo today when the debate started.
The decision by the first deputy speaker Bernard Ahiafor who was presiding to call two majority MPs and one minority brought the debate which was Kickstarted deputy majority leader George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan and seconded by Bimbilla MP Dominic Nitiwul and subsequently Bolgatanga Central MP Isaac Adongo to a halt.
Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin vehemently opposed the move of two is to one and argued it out forcefully.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, on his part, insisted the house adopt the business committee report and together with it the proportional allocation of debate slots.
After a back-and-forth with no end in sight, the first deputy speaker was compelled to suspend sitting following rejection of his proposal for one is to one allocation at least for today until the matter is resolved by the majority leader, Mahama Ayariga.
