Mining firm Heath Goldfields has cleared all outstanding arrears owed staff of the defunct Prestea Bogoso Mine as part of efforts to boost employee morale and strengthen relations between management and workers.
The company spent a total of GHC 103 million in settling the compensation owed to staff, marking a major milestone since its takeover of the mine.
Before Heath Goldfields’ acquisition, workers of the mine had gone several months without pay, contractors were left in debt, and underground pumping operations had ceased—resulting in severe flooding of the mine and economic distress in surrounding communities.
Following its takeover, Heath Goldfields injected $75 million to revive operations at the historic Prestea Bogoso Mine. The company has since employed 200 workers and engaged 15 local engineers.
Additionally, it has refurbished the mine’s process plant and installed a fully certified winding system that meets all safety standards.
