The Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) has begun investigations into the assault of GHOne TV journalist, Kwabena Agyekum Banahene, by a police officer during the parliamentary election rerun at the Pentecost North Odorkor 2 Polling Station in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, July 11, 2025, involved a police officer physically assaulting the journalist while he was at the polling centre reporting.
Despite identifying himself and showing his press accreditation, Mr. Banahene was attacked, drawing national outrage and condemnation from press freedom advocates.

As part of efforts to establish the facts and ensure accountability, a team from the PPSB on Monday visited the premises of the EIB Network to engage directly with Mr. Banahene and other key stakeholders of the EIB network.
The engagement meeting was attended by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EIB Network, Nathan Kwabena Anokye Adisi, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Santokh Singh, the company’s legal team, other senior executives, and the journalist himself. The police team assured the gathering that a thorough investigation would be conducted, and due processes would be followed to ensure justice is served.
EIB Network has reiterated its condemnation of the incident, describing it as an attack on press freedom, professionalism, and democracy. The CEO of EIB network, Nathan Kwabena Adisi, expressed gratitude to the PPSB for initiating investigations and emphasized the importance of swift and transparent action.

The assault has been widely condemned by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), and other media rights organizations, who have all demanded accountability and better protection for journalists, particularly during politically sensitive events like elections.
The police officer involved in the attack has been interdicted pending investigations. Meanwhile, the media fraternity and civil society continue to monitor the process, calling for justice and systemic reforms to prevent similar abuses in the future.
