The Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has cautioned Richard Gyan-Mensah, the deputy minister-Designate for Energy and Green Transition, about the challenges of pushing for reforms in Ghana’s public sector, urging him to remain bold despite resistance.
During Gyan-Mensah’s vetting, Afenyo-Markin reflected on his own experience with attempted reforms in the water sector, highlighting the political obstacles that often hinder change.
His remarks highlighted the difficulties of implementing structural changes in Ghana’s public utilities, particularly in energy and water. The call for bold leadership comes amid ongoing debates on possible privatisation of the Electricity Company of Ghana.
“I tried to reform Ghana Water, and I rather became the victim. It makes me sad as a politician because we don’t support each other for real reforms,” he explained.
He further warned that without assertiveness, efforts to transform the energy sector could be derailed.
“If you are not assertive, you will spend your time there, come back, and find the same political football being played. The system will fight you, but you must be bold and push for real reforms,” he advised.
