MP for Nadowli-Kaleo constituency, Alban Bagbin, has revealed he did all kinds of odd jobs including working as a farm labourer in order to survive.
Recounting his childhood experience on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 the second deputy Speaker of Parliament said he lost his father while in Senior High School and he had to do what it takes to survive.
“We lost our father in 1973 when I was still in Secondary school so we had to work and we were lucky during that time there was operation feed yourself and all schools were encouraged to have farms and so I was a farm labourer and anytime we had any break I worked and I was paid something and when I finished secondary school I had to go to Temasco.
“I had to go to the late Cardinal Dery, he was then an Archbishop to give me lorry fare to Tamale which he did and from there we went to a village near Ejura to work on Farm lands in order to survive. I did all kinds of odd jobs to survive so I know how it feels to be hungry,” the veteran lawmaker said on Starr 103.5 FM.
Mr. Bagbin added his struggles during his school days made him push to become who he is today, adding he organised and taught individuals who are now prominent personalities in society today.
He noted: “In Tamale I went round and consulted heads of departments to teach their kids that are schooling in the evenings and some of them accepted, so I started teaching and I earned a lot from that and some of the people I taught are now Pastors and others I do get in touch with and are doing very well”.
Mr. Bagbin is in his seventh term in the Chamber and one of the longest-serving parliamentarian in Ghana.
