The Institute for Education Studies (IFEST) has called on the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to publicly present a detailed action plan aimed at significantly improving performance in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a statement signed by IFEST Executive Director, Dr. Peter Anti Partey on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, IFEST said its review of the 2025 WASSCE results showed “persistent performance challenges” in key core subjects, particularly Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies.
The institute noted that although there were slight improvements in some areas, the overall results still pointed to “systemic gaps in instructional quality, examination preparedness, learning resources, and supervision.”
“Improving WASSCE outcomes is not merely about examination statistics; it is a matter of national human capital development,” the statement stressed.
IFEST is therefore urging the Ministry and GES to outline the specific interventions being rolled out ahead of the 2026 exams, including how syllabus coverage will be ensured across schools, and what supervision mechanisms are being strengthened to improve teaching quality.
The institute also asked for clarity on teacher training plans, student support systems such as remedial programmes and mock examinations, and the performance monitoring tools that will be used to hold school heads and education directors accountable.
“We therefore urge the Ministry and the Ghana Education Service to provide a detailed public action plan outlining timelines, measurable performance benchmarks, and monitoring frameworks for WASSCE 2026,” the statement added.
