A 14-year-old JHS 1 pupil of Dadeben Basic School, Lawrence Dogbe, has drowned in a river at Teachers’ Quarters, a suburb of Gomoa Nyanyano in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.
The incident, according to reports, occurred during the school vacation when the teenager reportedly went swimming with two friends.
Dogbe failed to resurface after entering a deep, concealed section of the water.
Panic-stricken, his companions initially fled the scene, but one friend returned hours later to raise the alarm.
A resident who assisted in the recovery of the body, Tai Hayford, said that the boy may have drowned after falling into a deep, concealed section of the river.
He noted that the area has become a death trap as a result of the collapse of a nearby bridge that has led to the creation of a dangerous conditions in the water below that are often hidden from view.
Confirming the tragedy, the Gomoa East District Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Hassan Hamidu, stated that his office is aware of the situation.
He assured the grieving community that efforts would be fast-tracked to repair the damaged bridge to prevent further loss of life.
The body of the deceased has been retrieved, leaving a family and a school community devastated by the loss of a young life.
