Kibi Goldfields Limited (KGL) has denied claims that soldiers protecting the company’s concession has shot some individuals in Akyem Saamang in Fanteakwa South District in Eastern Region.
Residents of Akyem Saamang over the weekend alleged that military personnel protecting the company fired warning shots during a violent clash with the community which resulted in injury of a woman selling roasted corn at the roadside, while at least three others suffered assault.
The youth were protesting mining in River Akusu by the company.
However in a statement issued, the company explained that, the Akyem Saamang Traditional Council invited the company specifically to dredge the polluted Akusu Stream, which had suffered extensive damage due to illegal mining activities.
As part of the project, the company provided financial assistance, funded the construction of three mechanized boreholes to provide alternate source of water for the residents, and ensured that traditional rites were performed before commencing operations.
KGL explained that it began work in February 2025 having acquired the necessary documents to adhere strictly to legal and environmental standards.
“With the proper legal framework in place, Including the water diversion permit (KGLID845/25) granted by Water Resource, KGL is fully authorized to carry out this essential environmental restoration work”.
However, the company says its operations were frequently threatened by illegal miners, prompting it to seek military protection.
For the past two months, the military has supported KGL’s internal security to protect lives, property, and the environment.
The company explained further that on the fateful day of August 2, a group of Saamang youth violently attacked their workers on site.
One of KGL’s security officers was injured, and an excavator and truck were destroyed.
According to the statement, the injured guard was transported to a local hospital, but some youth followed with intent to cause further harm and damaged a KGL vehicle at the hospital premises.
Military personnel on site escorted the team back to safety, and no civilian was shot, contrary to circulating rumors, the company emphasized.
“The military personnel on site escorted the KGL team to convey the damaged vehicle from the hospital to our site. We wish to categorically state that no civilian was shot during this process, contrary to circulating rumors.”
Two individuals alleged to have taken part in the violence were arrested and handed over to the Kyebi Divisional Police Command for investigation.
KGL reaffirmed its commitment to foster a strong and peaceful relationship with the Saamang community.
“The company has been actively engaged in various corporate social responsibility initiatives to improve livelihood for residents. KGL remains dedicated to working hand in hand with the community to support its social, economic, and environmental development”
KGL reiterates that its operations in Saamang are fully legal, conducted with the consent of relevant authorities and in accordance with all Ghanaian mining laws.
“We remain committed to supporting the development of the Saamang community through responsible practices, community engagement, and cooperation with traditional leaders and state institutions”.
Samuel Tei Agyemang, Mine Manager, Kibi Goldfields Company called for calm and urge all stakeholders to allow the law to take its course.
